Berwick Rangers kept the heat on leaders Stenhousemuir as a first-half strike by Gareth Hutchison was enough to see off plucky Albion Rovers.

The visitors threatened after just three minutes, but Chris McGroaty saw his curling free- kick from the edge of the box tipped over by Rovers' debutant keeper Gary McGlynn.

At the other end Albion should have taken the lead five minutes later when Craig Young was set up by Stephen Reid, but the striker shot high over from 12 yards.

Berwick went ahead in the 12th minute when Hutchison took advantage of some slack marking to nod home a Kevin McLeish cross.

Hutchison almost doubled Rangers' lead on the stroke of half-time, but his 30-yard strike flew just over the bar.

Berwick thought they had added to their tally just after the interval, but Ian Little's header was ruled out for offside.

Rangers went close moments later when Jamie Doyle's 20-yard effort shaved the crossbar on its way over.

Berwick had chances to extend their lead in the closing stages, but substitute Robert Horn had a low drive blocked before Kevin Haynes headed against the crossbar.
